Body shapers: which one, and how to wear it
Quick answer
Choose a body shaper by where you want smoothing: a high-waisted shaper for the tummy and waist, an abdominal wrap for the tummy alone, and an open-bust full shaper for the tummy, waist and back while you wear your own bra. It should feel firm, never painful, and you should be able to breathe and sit normally.
A body shaper does one honest thing: it smooths the line under a fitted outfit. It does not change your size, and the right one is the one you forget you are wearing.

The main types
- High-waisted shaper — from under the bust to the hip; smooths the tummy and waist. The most useful for everyday.
- Abdominal wrap or belly belt — wraps the middle only and adjusts; easy to put on and take off.
- Open-bust full shaper — covers tummy, waist and back, and leaves the bust open so you wear your own bra.
Under what
Under a fitted kameez or a saree blouse, a high-waisted shaper gives the cleanest line. Under a party dress or a maxi, an open-bust full shaper stops lines showing at the back. For a few hours at a wedding, an adjustable wrap is the easiest to live with.
How it should feel
Firm, like a snug hug — not tight enough to mark the skin or make breathing shallow. If it rolls down, it is too small or sitting too low. Wear it for the occasion rather than all day, and not to sleep in.
Care
Hand wash in cool water and dry flat in the shade. Heat is what ruins the stretch, so no iron and no machine dryer.
