Types of bras, and which to wear under shalwar kameez
The right bra is the one nobody notices — except you, because you feel it all day. Here's what each type is for, and how to choose one for the clothes you actually wear.
The main types
- Balconette — a straight neckline and wide-set straps that lift without pressure. Beautiful under square and scoop necks.
- Plunge — a deep centre for low and wrapped necklines, so nothing shows at the V.
- Full coverage — a full cup and wider straps that carry weight across the shoulder. The everyday workhorse.
- Wireless and bralettes — soft support from a firm underband instead of an underwire. For long days, travel and home.
- T-shirt / moulded — smooth cups that don't show a seam under fitted kurtas.
Under lawn and summer cotton

Under fitted kurtas and formal wear
A fitted kurta shows seams and straps. A smooth balconette or plunge with a firm band keeps the line clean. For deep necklines on formal wear, a plunge bra.
Under chiffon, net and dark colours
Sheer chiffon over a lining is forgiving; under dark colours and net, a black bra disappears where a nude one would show.
For home, travel and hot days
A wireless bra or a cotton bra: breathable, nothing pressing, and comfortable in a Punjab summer.
